Reading/Writing: (Level IV)
Level IV is an upper intermediate level general English course. It is designed for those students who want to gain a better understanding of grammar, improve their ability to read general, non-technical information, and develop their ability to write clearly.
English For Academic Purposes (Listening/Speaking): (Levels V and VI)
The objectives of this course are: to develop effective notetaking skills by listening to academic lectures; to integrate information from a variety of sources -- lectures and readings -- for purposes of class discussion and exams; to participate in seminar discussions and to present and defend opinions and solve problems -- to give formal presentations, lead discussions and answer questions; to develop and use discipline-specific vocabulary; and to improve oral intelligibility. This course simulates university level classes by featuring academic lectures and readings across the disciplines. Students conduct original research for oral presentations making use of library sources. Exams include multiple choice, true/false, short answer and essay questions. Intelligibility instruction focuses on the suprasegmentals (intonation, stress, rhythm, linking, volume, gestures) and fluency development.
English for Academic Purposes (Reading/Writing): (Levels V and VI)
Class work concentrates on three processes: critical thinking, reading, and writing. The thinking component provides students with practice in logical thinking and in the logic of English. Students study and use inductive and deductive reasoning, identify propaganda devices and learn how to develop logical arguments. The reading component helps students sharpen their analytical reading skills, increase their reading comprehension, and intensify their word power. The writing component of the course gives student practice in academic assignments: essays, revision work, paraphrasing, summarizing, and research. Among the kinds of writing assigned are exposition, argumentation, and description. Patterns of development practiced include comparison and contrast, definition, cause and effect, process, an analysis. A typed research paper complete with abstract, outline, and footnotes and bibliography is required of all students.
Reading/Writing in Your Field: (Levels V and VI)
This class is for students who plan to be or are graduate or undergraduate students, or who have completed the highest level of ELI classes and want to do academic work in their own field or in a field of interest. The course will help students improve academic reading, writing, vocabulary, and research while also giving them the opportunity to stay within one content area for the duration of the session.
English Through Desktop Publishing: (Levels IV-VI)
Students in this class will be working on improving writing skills (reporting, news writing, editing, and proofreading) as they design and publish their own publications, including New Voice. Students will learn basic principles of publication design and PageMaker 6.5, a desktop publishing software program. Basic computer skills are desirable.
English Through Literature: (Levels V and VI)
The primary focus of this class will be close reading. Close reading of various literary forms will include a study of complex grammatical structures. Readings will be fables, folklore, classical myths and legends, and contemporary literature. Class discussions and written work will help students understand references and symbols used in the language and help them develop an idiomatic and sophisticated vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to draw on their own cultural heritage in discussions and to scan modern literature in their writing.
